Mystery Bag
Some days, being a secretary really sucks. No, I mean it. Big time. 23 years of keeping this studio office ship-shape and I still get stuck with the grunt work. Isn’t that what interns are for?! C’mon, I’m not exactly young here. In fact, I’m old enough to be the grandparent of most of our interns. Oh well, I though, flicking my cigarette butt into the ashtray. A job’s a job. So evidently one of the studio rats decided to hightail it out of town without telling us. Gee thanks, buddy. Now I have to pick up after you! Whaddya think I am, your mother?? I sighed and picked up a spare cardboard box. Hobbling down the hallway, I entered the studio manager’s office. He wordlessly pointed to a pile of belongings. I made sure I hrumfed loudly after he didn’t return my greeting. I piled the items in the box and shuffled out the door. You see, women of my age don’t move quite as well as we used to. Takes a while for the ol’ body to get warmed up to the notion of exercise. I plopped down in my chair gratefully. If these high-tech, high-stress music execs know anything, it’s how to pick a chair. I groaned as I sank deeper into the aroma of the leather chair. Bored, I began picking through the items in the box. After all, I wouldn’t want this fellow’s girlfriend or mother to stumble upon a back issue of Playboy, now, would I? First out of the box was a peculiar-looking statue. A big oversized head that sat on its neck. I examined it carefully, as confused as could be. “Hey Myrtle. Whatcha looking at?” Jennifer’s shining face appeared next to me. My heart rate having jumped, I swatted her lightly. “Jennifer, I’m an old woman. You can’t scare me like that! Might give me a heart attack some day.” I paused. “You have any idea what this is?” I held out the statue. She examined it for a moment, blue eyes searching for clues. “Looks like a moai head,” she offered, placing the sculpture back on the counter. I raised a thin, painted-on eyebrow (get used to it, honey, it’ll happen to you too! . . . someday). “What’s that?” Jennifer tossed her blond hair over her shoulder. “Oh, they’re some old sculptures they found out in the middle of nowhere—Easter Island to be exact. I’m surprised you didn’t remember them. You’d think that they would have been big news when they were first sculpted.” That Jennifer! In my day, we were taught to respect our elders, not heckle them needlessly! I grumbled a bit under my breath. “So what were they?” She shrugged. “Why don’t you google it?” I stared blankly at her. “Huh? He doesn’t have googly eyes!” With an exasperated sigh, Jennifer leaned over the computer keyboard—a possessed device that I positively refuse to touch—and pressed a few keys and clicked a few buttons. “Here Myrtle. Read what’s on the screen.” Begrudgingly I rolled myself over next to the machine and squinted. “Think I need my bifocals,” I proclaimed, feeling for them. Jennifer rolled her eyes and retrieved them, plopping them right in front of me. Focusing on the bright screen, I read a few lines. “‘Important lineage status symbols,’ eh? Sounds like something an egomaniac would own.” I read further. Considering further information on the origins of the moai statues (which, I discovered, reside on the isolated Easter Island), I mulled over the idea that this poor fellow who had disappeared wanted to prove something. You know, leave something behind as a legacy, like those old folks had done with the heads. My shrink tells me I’m not supposed to analyze people like that. He says it’s a job for trained professionals. But I don’t like him anyhow. He buffs his nails. Curious and bored, I dug into the box for another item. I came up with some weird sort of adaptor, shiny and gold. I stared at it for a while, wondering its purpose. After all, honey, I may have worked with musicians for 23 years, but that doesn’t mean I know jack about music! Looks like something your average studio rat would shove in his pockets while working, maybe intending to put it away later. Some of them aren’t the trustworthiest folks out there, see, so a lot of the storerooms are locked at night. Maybe that’s why I didn’t know the kid. Old farts like me don’t work at night (we have enough trouble staying awake during the day!). Besides, no one important ever calls at midnight. That’s why we let the inexperienced kids work then. They get good at grunge jobs and they don’t complain too bad. So far, we’ve got an insecure studio rat who probably can’t make ends meet working nights here. A lot of the guys work two jobs. Maybe this guy found another job somewhere and forgot about his stuff. After all, I thought as I pulled another object out of the box, who’s gonna come back for a lousy guitar pick? Now, you may think old Myrtle’s a one-trick pony, that I’m good for smoking and answering the phone (that’s at the same time, honey; I can multitask), but I wager that I could be a pretty good shrink. Even if Dr. Thompson tells me I really shouldn’t. After all these years in the industry, I’ve learned that at some of those wild and crazy rock concerts the guitar players throw souvenirs out—things like guitar picks and some gross sweaty towels. So I figure the kid was one of those extreme fans, the kind that’d stand in line for days to get good tickets, and the kind that come back from concerts with bruises from moving toward the stage through the crazed crowd. All for the experience of “being there,” getting good and close to their heroes. Me, well, I’ll just adjust the rabbit ears over my television and catch a rerun of the symphony on the public channel. Some of these music fans are really something. I mean, you should see what sort of folks meander into our studio here. One time, this nut job with his hair standing straight up tried to make a break past me at the front desk just to see his favorite drummer recording a new song. Mind you, we stopped him (only there wasn’t really a “we,” because I’m not about to get up and chase a young whippersnapper like him at my age!), but I’m telling you, kids these days are crazy! Don’t they have anything better to do?? You know, I’ll bet this runaway techie was just like that. I’ll bet he has all those band posters in his room, and he talks about those big rich guys like they’re his best buddies. They all do. Almost like stalkers, they are. You probably don’t know this, but I had a stalker once. Long time ago. If you don’t mind my saying so, I used to be hot stuff! Well, anyways . . . The next item out was a small video, with a large “Do Not Watch” emblazoned on it with marker. | | Saturday, February 25th, 2006 | | 12:25 am |
O_O
I remembered my LJ password on the first try! That's worthy of a journal entry in and of itself!!! And that's all I know! . . . other than that I spent WAY too long making a dumb slideshow! Only 40 seconds-ish of it done! Yay me! (the song's 3 min. 45 sec. o_O) So yeah. There you have it. My lonely boring life! HURRAY! Hmmm . . . Crap Day
It's been . . . errrr . . . a REALLY long time since I've updated this page! o_O So today kinda sucked I guess, though I did have a blast at Katelyn's surprise birthday party. It rocked and we had tons of fun. But wow, I need to go to sleep. I then went to a driver's ed. behind-the-wheel lesson, two hours of pure hell with a cheap-feeling car with a-pillars I couldn't see around and an instructor who evidently had never felt a smooth stop before! As for a crappy day, never mind. Hard to explain. So I ate three big cookies and some jerky instead @_@. Maybe I'll go to the Zion Tournament tomorrow before doing my homework. *shrug* Gotta run tomorrow though since we have the AcaDec Moe's Night Monday. But yeah, there's your update. The D30 and I have rolled through over 1500 frames together!! O_O YIKES! --Amy! Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: Nickelback "How You Remind Me" | | Friday, October 21st, 2005 | | 3:59 pm |
This update is for Sam so he has something to comment on!!! ;) Heading out to the mall tonight with Corrine and Katelyn for a while then going out to my dad's. If only my contacts weren't driving me nuts . . . Current Mood: uncomfortable | | Thursday, October 13th, 2005 | | 8:30 pm |
That Camera Deal
Oops, forgot to mention this: About that D30! So most of you reading this probably already know about it, but here's the crash course: K, I get an e-mail from an EAAer a few weeks after AirVenture and I think, "Oh man, I got on some mailing list . . ." OH contrare!!! (and yes, I meant to spell it that way!) What the e-mail ACTUALLY contained was an offer to have a D30 digital SLR on long-term loan (until it's requested back or I get my own DSLR). Not only was I offered the camera body, but also some used lenses if I needed them (and I have ones that will fit, so I didn't need them)! *gasp* That's pretty generous!! Of course I accepted (like any sane person would) and the camera was shipped out immediately--and I do mean IMMEDIATELY! It came in literally a day and a half (not far to travel, but still-darn quick!), but I was at my dad's and so I didn't get it until three days later (my brother was supposed to bring it out, but he forgot). When I opened the box, I was fully prepared to sprint out to Best Buy to get memory cards, a card reader, and a battery & charger. But, lo and behold, what do I see but (very neatly and carefully wrapped) two memory cards (and good ones, too!!), a PCMCIA card reader adapter, a battery, AND charger!!! *ear-to-ear grin* I wasn't expecting anything out of the way as I was so grateful for this loan-gift; imagine my surprise!! I am deeply indebted to an anonymous FenceChecker (just don't want to cause dissension--I'm just one blessed person, not necessarily talented! ;) ) for this incredible opportunity! So it's been with me for a while, now. Probably almost two months. Doesn't feel that long! It's a lot like the Rebel, so I quickly became acclimated to it, so now, just like my beloved Rebel, it's just an extension of me. *hugs camera* And now you know! | | 7:41 pm |
Sooo . . .
Been a while since that last update, eh??? (No Canadian jokes, please--I'm from Wisconsin alright!) Speaking of Canada, that reminds me of Yuskis' apparent obsession with the US taking over Canada (but they fly a much cooler Hornet demo than we do--and their demo bird has a much hotter paint scheme--even if it's an ugly Bug;)). That reminds me, I wonder how Katelyn and Beth did on their APUSH test . . . hmmm . . .well! On to more important things! I suppose I must start with Monday. So, after a weekend of ignoring my homework (it was Homecoming and I slept in till the PM both days--felt guilty missing church, though:( ), I planned to catch up on all of that Monday night . . . until . . . I had just taken my contacts out and my begins to ring . . . I don't recognize the number but find out it's Katelyn. "So, my dad wants to know if you want to go flying?" Now, I must ask you . . . IS THAT SERIOUSLY A QUESTION???!!???! So of course I went and skipped running with the dog (poor pooch). We flew from Capitol to Cindy Guntly and back. Cindy Guntly is one of the coolest airports around. It's a little grass strip out in what-used-to-be-the-middle-of-nowhere surrounded by farms. When we were circling to land, I kept looking around, thinking, "Where's the airport?? All I see is a bunch of fields . . ." It just fits. And it's kinda funny, 'cause the fields look as manicured as a golf course from the air, and the strip looks like . . . well . . . it looks like my lawn! *eye roll* That's the first time I've ever landed on a grass runway, and it was pretty cool! The airplane feels a little more slippery down there but it's just . . . cool. Saves the tires too, so heck, why not?? In addition to being in such a neat location (curse those suburbs being built--and I swear to you that if that airport is ever once threatened by people complaining about noise or whatnot, all you-know-what will break loose and I will lead the charge! More on this later . . .), CG is home to a few "derelict" airplanes--ok, a little more than a few. With 20/20 hindsight, I wish I had more pictures. It's just a cool airport. (BTW, there is a Yak 52 there-Experimental, doesn't have the airworthiness certificate signed off yet. $36,000 takes it!) So on the way back, we had to do some fun stuff. We were swooping along in curvy fashion right down on the deck, 10 feet or so off the surface of a lake. AWESOME!! My one regret: the pictures I got didn't convey how close we were, or any motion. Will remember that next time! Oh yes, and I flew the airplane. Part of the way there, and part of the way back. Neat airplane that Varga is--a perfect mix between the "Pay ATTENTION and FLY ME" attitude of the lovely-feeling Falco and the "Please don't pull that hard I don't do turns" Skyhawk (and I do so ever love them!). It's not slow, but not twitchy. Responsive but not touchy. And it feels like home--cozy but not cramped--though it is hard to see the gauges from the back since there isn't dual-instrumentation. So yeah. That was my Monday. Sweet awesomeness. Caught a gorgeous sunset hopping out of the airplane too--and hence found that the D30's sensor needs to be cleaned. >:[ Ok, I was up too late, like 11 (I can't function on less than 7.5-8 hours of sleep). Grr! But it was GREAT fun!!! *sigh* Now I'm stuck back on the ground without any idea when I get to go flying next (3 times in one year isn't bad for me, though--just not enough. NEVER enough!) In other news! Turned in the yearbook tryout disc today. I'll find out Tuesday what the verdict is--but based on the fact that no one knew the evils of JPEGs, I think I sounded intelligent. I was on the staff last year, so I should either have a great chance or no chance at all, based upon what they thought of my work last year. My goal this year is to raise the quality of the photography in our yearbook a few notches--layouts are great, but the photos give class. Looking at buying an external flash for the cameras. Waiting for yearbook tryout results (since that is where it would get the greatest amount of use--though a good flash is always useful) to decide, otherwise I'll get PhotoShop CS2 Premium (God bless student discounts!). If I get the flash this year, CS2 waits till next year and I'll get Elements in the meantime. So there you have it. PSAT on Saturday. Like getting up for school to take a 3-hour-long test. How exciting. But hey, I need to get a scholarship, so practicing with that type of test is just another check mark on the list. Well, that's an awful long update. Will add more later if I haven't already mentioned the "new" camera. WOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gee, that's a surprise! It was AMAZING!!!!!!!! I'm just crossing my fingers that my first experience with slide film will be a positive one!! Almost 11 rolls of film used (just a few exposures left on the last 36-exp. Sensia roll), though I LOST ONE!!!! And it was Sensia too!!!! $5 gone right there!! Though now my poor mom doesn't have to pay processing costs on it . . . Really hoping I can go again!!! SS1 and White Knight were AWESOME!!! However, the GlobalFlyer doesn't show up until tomorrow (Tuesday)!! So I hope to get my dad to take me somehow, some way, so I can see both (the next extended stop is the museum)! It was a great day, even though I got absolutely SOAKED by the Official Inaugural Oshkosh Deluge!!!!! Not cool but the day was still great!!! Can't wait to go again!!! Though I may suffer post-Oshkosh depression after being so abruptly withdrawn from all of those pretty, wonderful, beloved, shiny airplanes . . . I DID get a chance to meet Jim Koepnick!!!!! WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!! It was pretty cool, though I had been hoping to run into Richard and Tyson from FenceCheck (those devils with media passes!!!). Heard that Tyson got stuck at the airport somehow. That SUCKS!! He missed SSO's arrival (though he was on hand as media for the X-Prize flights anyhow). Oh well. Very tired now!! But ready to do it all over again!!!! Need more flying text!!! Did I mention I get to meet EAA Chief Photographer Jim Koepnick??!!??! *Dances* AND I get to see SpaceShipOne fly for the last time!!! Happy and sad all at the same time! So that's cool even if I didn't manage to rent my L-lens, :(. Lots of fun stuff to see, including an AirVenture commercial! Watch for it! It's too hot!!!!!!!!!!! No A/C in the shop and it's humid!! :P However, I DID see a Stearman (I presume, probably the same one I saw a while ago out of Waukesha) at approximately 6:37 Wednesday evening. Pretty cool! Going to see the Collings Foundation B-24 and B-17 next Thursday, Oshkosh Monday for SS1 (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D) then Tuesday or Wednesday (I hope), in addition, I'm trying for another day! Good News/Bad News
Bad news first. If you watched the news Sunday, you've heard about a mid-air collision or two. To clear the record, there were two. One occurred in Delaware, the Vulture Formation Team, I'm told. They fly 4 RV-4s and 2 Rutan EZ (Long-EZs I think). Two collided (the EZs I believe), one pilot confirmed dead, and they haven't found the wreckage of the second aircraft yet (pilot assumed dead as well, but I can hope). IN ADDITION, at the Saskatchewan Air Show (Saskatchewan Centennial, btw) two airplanes from the Masters of Disaster "X-Team," one of the greatest air show teams out there, a personal favorite, and the most sought-after civilian team in the U.S., collided, killing airshow legends Bobby Younkin and Jimmy Franklin, obviously destroying their aircraft (Bobby's "Samson" and Jimmy's Jet Waco). I saw these guys just under a month ago and refrained from taking as many pictures as I would have liked since I was getting an evil eye from my mom, who actually pays for film processing. I figured I'd see them again at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Just goes to show that you can't predict where life will go and that it can end any day, any time. Jimmy and Bobby were some of the most experienced airshow performers in the world, and some of the best. Life's short. Live dangerously. Have no regrets. And for cryin' out loud . . . SHOOT LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index.php/topic,3285.msg44006.html#msg44006 This is a FenceCheck thread I started to honor Bobby Younkin and Jimmy Franklin. There are some truly awesome photographers out at FC, some of my humble work is there as well. Thus, you should check it out. Good news is, I'm having a HILARIOUS duel with a photographer at Pylon1. I'm smiling again, losing two of the greatest airshow pilots I've ever seen and two I haven't was really depressing. So it's good to crack up again. The Blau's party yesterday was a TON OF FUN!!!!!! :D And then we had a church potluck, food, YUM! I tried to teach a bunch of kids how to play Tasmanian Devil Kickboxing but I couldn't get all of them together at the same time and then it was time to eat. DRAT!!! And I would have had a chance of beating some of them too . . . :( Well then, I must take a shower and go to sleep soon since I am going back to my dad's tomorrow. However, there is thunder and lightning out there, hmm . . . while I've never been electrocuted in the shower before, I don't think that now is a good time to start . . . *strokes chin thoughtfully* I'll figure something out 'cause I'm smart that way!!! ;) Uhhh . . . my scanner's screwed up . . . my photo editing software nearly froze my computer . . . I *might* get a 20D (*GASP*) . . . but that would be in January, :(. And I think that's all I know for now . . . saw the new Herbie movie. I REALLY don't like Lindsay Lohan but whatever . . . I like Herbie more. It was actually pretty good. http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=HydroFoam It's amazing!!!!! And very amusing . . . I want one . . . That may just be it . . . http://www.youthink.com/quiz.asp?action=take&quiz_id=999 Find out what punctuation mark you are. I was a colon, and COLONS ROCK!!!!!! I don't know much right now . . . we have to pick up a 9000 tonight (and my dad is going in for a haircut) and then we might go to a movie. *shrug* Still on the hunt for my EOS 10D!!!!!! Well not much going on here but I need to get going quickly to finish packing to go to my dad's. Tired. Picked up 8 rolls' worth of pictures today, kinda disappointed with the results, :(. Oh well, I'll post 'em over at Fence Check and will immediately be told what I've screwed up on . . . (if I ever work up the nerve to sit there and scan them all in--plus it's depressing to see how my cheapy scanner murders the colors). Still working on getting my 10D, looks like it'll be a while! :( :( :( In time for Oshkosh??????? In time for yearbook fall sports???? *crosses fingers on both accounts* And, CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS???? I'm delaying getting my temps (and, thus, my driver's license) by not taking drivers' ed. in July (thought I should have been taking it sometime between April and June). WHY, you ask???? Because there is NO WAY I'm missing AirVenture Oshkosh for drivers' ed.!!!!!! I HAVE PRIORITIES!!!! And Oshkosh (and SpaceShipOne, White Knight, and the GlobalFlyer--and OODLES of Mustangs) are far higher up on the list than drivers' ed.!!! Though now I must delay getting a job . . . :( Darn it, I WANT L-GLASS!!!!!!! (If you don't know what that is . . . I can't help you--you need to consult a professional!) Since my laptop can't access the Internet, it appears that e-mail and this Live Journal will be my only contact with the rest of you except when I'm back at my mom's (though I call/am called by a few of you).
